I asked Rob Harvey to modify some Ampex 350 and 351 as microphone preamplifiers. This was many years ago, before it was common and before Rob had ever done such a task. Modifying an Ampex 350 or 351 to a microphone preamp in some ways is simple. In the hands of most other technicians this task would be addressed quickly and thoughtlessly. Instead Rob worked on both these conversions with serious focus. Doing a great deal of testing and listening. He engineered the two tape recording electronics into the best possible microphone preamps they could be. In the process Rob discovered many small variations between productions and how each of those differences translated to sound. And throughout many years of converting these, he has continued to improve them. A World Pro Audio Ampex 350/351 conversion to microphone preamp is an outstanding piece.
